Teaching Sportsmanship

Winning and losing inherently evoke emotions that children experience very early in their development.

At the conclusion of each exciting game we offer a valuable opportunity to teach good sportsmanship. As one team celebrates their victory and the other team experiences defeat, two players are shown shaking hands.

It is important for children to understand that both the player that wins and the player that loses, pay tribute, give praise and gratitude to each other, they both exhibit good sportsmanship.

As parents, educators and coaches, we have the responsibility to influence a child's ability to cope effectively in an healthy manner with these strong and life long emotional feelings that result from both winning and losing. Good sportsmanship is an important and positive value contributing to the healthy social-emotional development of our children.

Reaching out to an opponent to shake hands after a hard fought game to celebrate each other’s efforts will help build confidence and self esteem in our children as well as respect for others.

Each story ends with a message and example of good sportsmanship from both a winning player and a losing player.
